Art Weekend is alive! I love collaboration. The synthesis of photography with HD Video, analog art and music-making all in one space was electrifying.

I decided to make a promo piece for my upcoming gallery show for cut paper art, which I shot using my an MC-36 Remote Release Cord and my Nikon D700 in JPG mode, high quality/small size. I set it to 10 sec intervals with a 5-second delay (to avoid camera shake), pre-focused in manual and set custom white balance (since adjusting after wards on 8-bit JPGs is a bear…). One of my favorite methods is to use Live Preview to compose the shot right after focus and white balance. I flew the camera on the top of some old FOBA Combitube I picked up over a decade ago, since my tripod doesn’t go to 8 ft. in the air ;)

Part of the fun was multitasking, and by this I mean that I was engrossed in making art, listening to Brian and Chrstian (a.k.a. Attack and Release) make music and thinking about timing and composition as a film editor and DOP while choosing camera angles and focal lengths simultaneously. Total creative mash-up. The result is this video. Enjoy!

Shortly after speaking at WPPI 2010, I realized that I’d like to give back to the photographic community. Specifically, I’d like to start a website where I could share what got attendees of my lectures so excited. And on top of that, I wanted to do it with those very same people, so we could all share the experience as an opportunity for mutual growth. The result is togs4togs.com

I am grateful that some talented and interesting people who mostly did not know each other prior to this day made an positive, indelible experience. Gabe, Nancy, Zoo, Sylvester, you’re just plain awesome. Now, on to the fireworks…

Best of friends, best of times in the Valley of Fire - part 1

There is nothing like having your creative passions fueled by other similarly-minded people. And I mean friends who are simply awesome. In this case, I was planning a desert night shoot with my buddy Zoo (yes, Zoo) then Gabe told me that he and Nancy were planning a night shoot at the Valley of Fire - a destination I definitely wanted to hit. Done.

So we hopped in the minivan yesterday around noon, picked up Sylvester on the opposite corner and headed north! After stopping for a mad shopping dash so that Zoo coudl cook insanely-delicious food that evening, we zoomed into the park right at sunset. We had called ahead to make sure there was camping available - it was imperative that our bellies be happy in addition to our eyes.

We drove around, getting used to the sights, chasing light and hoping to meet up with the Zisers. Success!

Dusk approached…

More She-nanigans. Photographers are insanely funny. Seriously. We are.

And then we drove on to chase the dusk…

These were some of the most delicate dusk shots I’ve ever recorded. The colors are subtle and amazing.

And then it was night and we wanted to hit a campsite so Zoo could cook an INSANELY delicious meal via the headlights of the minivan.

Infrared at dusk in Nevada’s Valley of Fire

So I converted my Canon G9 to infrared last year, and then remembered that I had a Sony IR Emitter from an old SD Video camera almost 10 years ago in the closet. Hmmm. Yes. Yesterday I was out shooting with friends old and new at the Valley of Fire and we stopped at dusk to do some portraits. Results are mystical. Love it.

So I heard about the big contest Nikon is holding, and it got me all jazzed up. I shot this in one evening with my D700 - 5300+ frames, all handheld. All were then imported into iStopMotion HD, and exported via XML to Final Cut Pro. My good friends steamed up to create the original music, and I recorded the foley with my trusty Edirol R-1. Much of it was from building a personal foley library over the past few years.
